Rebuildinglives.
Millions suffer in conflict zones without basic medical care or schooling. AMAR reaches as many as it can with healing, learning and a pathway to a better future.
Five fronts.
One purpose.
Healthcare, education, emergency aid, mental health and the Windsor Dialogues: five lines of work, one aim, that people affected by conflict and displacement can rebuild their lives.
Thirty-five years.
Eleven million consultations.
Founded in 1991 by Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne after Saddam Hussein's attacks on his own people, AMAR began among the Marsh Arabs of southern Iraq. It employs no expensive Western personnel. Local doctors, teachers and volunteers work inside the state's own clinics and schools, so the capacity stays where it is built.
A small team in London runs the operation. Local doctors, teachers and volunteers deliver it in their own communities, which keeps costs low and keeps the work going where international staff could not.

Three countries.
Five offices.
AMAR works in Iraq, Romania and Ukraine, from offices in London, Basra, Erbil and Dohuk, and Sighetu Marmației. Earlier programmes in Lebanon, Iran and Pakistan are closed.

AMAR was founded to help the Marsh Arabs of southern Iraq under Saddam Hussein's persecution. Today the Basra office runs primary healthcare clinics, a mobile clinic, women's training and Ramadan parcels for the communities around Rumaila.
When ISIS attacked the Yazidis in 2014, AMAR was the first to help in the camps of Dohuk, and it is still there while others have left: clinics, the Yazidi Ladies Peace Choir, music lessons and vocational training in Khanke and Essyan.
AMAR has worked in Romania since 1992, first with children in state care. Since 2022 the team on the Ukrainian border has served refugee mothers and children: winter clothing, a summer school and embroidery training.
Across the border in Zakarpattia, AMAR works with schools and inclusive-education centres for children with special needs, and carries winter clothing to frontline communities as far as Nikopol.
AMAR's American sister charity is based in Utah. Its volunteers knit the hats and scarves for Ukrainian children and raise funds for AMAR's work from the United States.
